And now kids, here's what not to do! While kayak fishing around Noosa river today I got the urge to head out through the heads and into the surf to troll along the back of the breakers for a while. Of course, this means coming back in through the breakers, which is always fun. It was particularly fun for me today and somehow I knew it was going to be, which is why I was inspired to capture the moment on film. There are 2 clips here, one taken immediately after the other. Clip #1 demonstrates kayak surfing in a Hobie Revolution done right. Clip #2 demonstrates how very quickly it can all go bad.
At first it might be difficult to fully appreciate how fast I'm moving here, but in the 1st clip, take note of the wash splashing up from the bow. In the second clip you can see me catch up to the wave in front (which is the same wave I'm riding in the 1st clip). This wave is bigger and really picks up speed. So much so that I slowed down on the pedlling. I suspect that this was my big mistake. Read on to view the clips. Comments (2) | E-mail | Read more... |

Here's that footage of the Longtail Tuna I chanced upon at Bribie Island last week. Sadly it doesn't really do the moment a great deal of justice and I failed in capturing any of the fish very clearly. It does, however, give you an idea of how active they were. Every splash you see in frame is not a small breaking wave - it's a really really big fish getting a smaller fish into it's belly. Comments (1) | E-mail | Read more... |

I encountered this pod of leisurely dolphins in Moreton Bay, just south of Bribie Island. The footage is about 1 minute long, and has a few good close ups on a large dolphin that has had it's dorsal fin savaged by something - most likely a shark. Comments (4) | E-mail | Read more... |

Iluka is a fantastic little perch at the northern end of NSW and one of the first things I diliberated when I observed the waterways was how long it might be before I find myself kayaking among dolphins. If I'd have guessed within 2 hours, I'd have been right. These guys just kept appearing - by no coincedence - wherever I found fish. I filmed them several times, but this was the best of the footage. In hind sight I should have stuck the camera underwater - I was certainly close enough. I actually got gently nudged a few times, once on the Mirage drive fins and another on the bow, although it was friendly if not accidental. If my filming seems distracted (towards the end) it's because a guy was calling out to me from the nearby rockwall. He'd ran into trouble with his boat (you can see it right at the end of the clip) and needed my help to tow a haul rope back to him. If not for that I probably would have got much better footage because these creatures just wouldn't leave me alone :-) Comments (4) | E-mail | Read more... |

Sly, stealthy and... shark eaters? While squid have never bothered me I have to admit that I find Octopus to be rather creepy creatures. This here (quite amazing) video clip is a good example as to why. You just never know when a big chunk of seaweed is actually half Octopus. This video has been doing the rounds for a while apparently, but I've just stumbled upon it. Which lead me to this other clip, which is even more fascinating. Who would win between a giant Octopus and a 5 foot shark? Read on to see for yourself! Comments (4) | E-mail | Read more... |

Now this looks like funAs is always the case, there are some that seem to be frowning over the very specialised sport of bowfishing and it strikes me as especially ironic when a fisherman takes offense to it. I really don't see how this is much different to fishing with a rod. With roots in handspear fishing (which is one of the ways mankind has done it for 1000s of years), bowfishing is a legitimate method of catching fish recreationally. Regulations on bowfishing vary from state to state so this is worth looking into if you feel like giving it a try. To be sure, bowfishing is a fringe element of the recreational fishing fraternity, even more exclusive than that of kayak fishing. But as hardcore as bowfishing sounds, there is infact an 'extreme' version of it: aerial bowfishing. And oh boy, does it look like fun. The following video clips show off bowfishing in all it's glory, both vanilla and extreme versions of it. The first clip shows a more leisurely and strategical approach while the second clip demonstrates the clay-pigeon target-like aerial style. Obviously, to even have a chance of doing aerial bowfishing, you'd need to get amongst big leaping fish like these guys. In fact the fish are so active that if all they were interested in was the fish, they could have just sat back and let them jump into the boat! Spooled1's Marine Park dilemaI can see the underlying logic on the existence of marine reserves but their existence does create an inadvertant side effect that has the ability to blur the lines between what is legally and morally right. Unfortunately, the penalties for crossing the legal boundaries are so steep that most of us would rightfully feel compelled to favour the law instead of moral common sense. You can't blame anyone for doing that, but as is evidenced in this video by AKFF member Spooled1, it can result in heartbreak for the fishermen and long-lasting toothache for the fish. There's more than one way to skin a cat, marlin ! Jet ski fishing. Ha... and some people think we're extreme! Me thinks the maniac fishing from a jet ski this here video clip makes us kayak fishermen look kinda tame. Marvel at the stupidity of his hook removal technique! Listen closely and you'll hear him (the presenter from NZ based The Fishing Show) say 'what could be more crazy than this?' Good question really, but it does remind me of an experiment I very nearly tried several years ago: life jacket fishing. The plan was to just wade into the water wearing a PFD and try to fish while floating around in the water. Fortunately, someone talked me out of it (yet secretly I remain convinced it could be done). But yeah... I think that is probably dumber than jet ski fishing and I'm surprised I'm admitting even thinking about it. Be first to comment this article | E-mail | Read more... |

Squidtastic, better than plastic Looks innocent enough... Lately I've been experimenting with what I've coined 'Squidplastic' fishing - the art of using pieces of squid as imitation soft plastic lures. I haven't been at it long and haven't hooked any prize fish yet, but the signs are really very promising. I introduced the concept in this little write up a few weeks back and have been toying with the idea ever since. Despite the fact that 'm yet to have any photos with awe-inspiring fish hooked by this method, I have thus far caught Pinky Snapper and Flathead with them and as evidenced by this video clip (taken at Rickett's Point last weekend), they aren't the only species likely to show interest. Had I been using smaller hooks here, I'm sure I'd had a few hook ups.
The hungry little Leatherjackets here aren't alone either. I can't quite tell what those other fish are (not in frame for long). Tailor or Bream is my guess. Anyone care to ID them? Click the 'read more' link to watch the clip. Comments (2) | E-mail | Read more... |

Fishing with an RPG In days gone past the content of this clip would bother me a great deal, holding it high as a horrible example of what I would label as an unsustainable method of fishing. But so long as they're not doing it here, I really don't care what these guys do with their rocket launchers so from this distance I only see the funny side of it. They wouldn't even have to bother cooking these fish - the explosion would take care of that for them! Bin Laden eats well tonight... even if the cache of rockets is starting to look pretty slim. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who thinks that fishing with an RPG is overkill. At the risk of sounding racist, either these Afgani soldiers are really really bored, or they just don't have much of a clue. One would think they'd have better things to do with their RPGs. Apparently not though, which would be good news for the nervous coalition of the willies :-) Be first to comment this article | E-mail | Read more... |
