hobie outback snapper
Scott Lovig bags a nice 'lil table sized pinky - a common site at Mornington

I haven't written up a kayak fishing report for over a week now, which isn't to say I haven't been out for a fish in that time. On the contrary, I've had 3 trips since my last report - but aside from the last trip consisting of a test run on a Hobie Revolution and Miragedrive ST fins, I really haven't had a lot to report. Of these 3 trips, 2 of them were at Fishermen's Beach, where I bagged 5 Squid on Saturday afternoon and nothing on Tuesday morning. I also went for a fish at Rickett's Point on Sunday afternoon, where I also scored a goldern duck. This is all a fitting reminder of why here isn't a great place to be right now.

That brings me to the other reason I haven't taken the time to write reports on those trips, which is the simple fact that it's not long before my planned departure date of mid July and there's still a fair few loose ends to tie up. On top of this, I'll be spending a week helping out the Victorian Hobie dealership at the Melbourne Boat Show early July, so I'm running out of time. I stuck my hand up to volunteer for this, as I see it as a good chance with perfect timing to start promoting this website, as well as to make some good contacts just before I go.

Now that this site is starting to take shape and resemble what it will really look like when I embark on this trip, the time is also right for me to start seeking out a few sponsors. It's not imperative for me to have all of that in place before I go, but it would be nice. So the boat show should be a good chance to get the ball rolling on that front as well. Over the next few weeks I also have to sell my motorbikes and computers, have all my mail directed somewhere safe, say goodbye to a lot of people and most especially, spend as much time with my son before having to say goodbye to him as well.

So I'm trying to fit a lot into a short space of time and depending on how easy or difficult it is to sell my bikes (or one of them at least), there's a possibility I'll get stalled for a week or two. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that but I may not have any choice in the matter. Because my schedule is filling up quickly, my time will be drained somewhat until the time that I leave and I think there's a good chance I won't do any more fishing or destination reports until I do go and get started for real. I probably won't even get a chance to go fishing again before I leave. That pretty much means I won't be doing any more Victorian reports until I return and I'm not exactly sure how long that will be. 14-15 months is my guess.

By then, I imagine that the style of these reports will change somewhat. To this point, most of the content I have written for this site is really placeholder kind of stuff. I've been using it to experiment with presentation, content administration system and generally getting everything to work and look OK. There are still plans in place to add several more features to the functionality and content of the site (hopefully that will all be in place within the next couple of weeks) and this will translate to more depth in some of the articles here at Yakabout.

Because of this, I'll definitely be revisiting all of the places I've written reports for thus far and will update them with more information and edit them all to be up to the standard that these articles will soon be setting.

Good point Scott. I just took another look to see how the figures on that poll stack up when looked at that way. Scores are:
Hobie: 58
Ocean Kayak: 38
Perception: 20

I gather a few conclusions from this, the first most obvious being that Hobies seem to be going from strength to strength. That\'s quite an achievement considering they aren\'t cheap. Pedal yakkin is really catching on.

The Perception Swing is clearly a really popular kayak, being the second most popular overall (accounting for all votes on Perception). I think that makes it the market leader for paddle yaks. Clearly it\'s very popular for a reason.

Can't wait to hear of your exploits
Mate,

I can't wait to read the reports of this fabulous adventure you have planned. It really will be the trip of a lifetime, and the memories will stay with you forever. My only advice is to never let anyone sway you from this dream.

I still think constantly of the 12 months the missus and I had around Oz in a Kombi in 74, and a few more recent trips to the top of WA and QLD.

The real Oz (especially the Outback, and the Top End)is just such unbelievable country. I still have this hankering to get back there whenever the opportunity presents. What I wouldn't have done to have had a yak at the time.

I'm just green with envy mate, so if ya get to Sydney make sure you look me up. Maybe I could show you my slides (yep real slides). :grin

Heya Occy, few have tried to talk me out of it but all have failed. What you say about the Aus outback is so to, and thats why I can't wait to get back to it. So many placs I'm looking forward to seeing.

I will definitely get to Sydney - probably not too far away (I may well stop in for a few days on my way further north) and will definitely get back to it to have a much closer look down the track as well.

What are slides? :-)
