Today turned out to be a well executed plan in action![]() Sailing towards the mouth Got myself one of those flash hobie jackets... well worth it…made this weeks trips very comfortable. With winds hovering around 7 – 10 knots I planned to use the out going tide to head out to Round Top and Flat Top Islands. These lay just out of the mouth of the Pioneer River and I had yet to get around these. Launching at 12:00 pm at the River St ramp I was faced with a stiff outgoing tide and SSE wind pitting one against the other. Heading downstream was easy and only required 6 or so tacks to be at the mouth. There was no surface action anywhere for the whole day the only birds I see these days are those chasing my surface lures. The day was perfect and sailing was enjoyable and trolled a Rapala CD11 redhead the whole way. I had a goal today... usually I don’t, so it required me to be more planned with my approach. The wind today shifted quite quickly between S & E and the island created some still areas as well as some nice gusty areas around the headlands. I also set up runs for the lure along current lines, structure and any drop offs. Hooked this nice little trevally but getting hooked on my big rig the fight was quick and easy. There was not one mackerel bust up anywhere. Still waiting... ![]() Nice little GT At low tide there are many sandbars that are exposed, knowing what side to be to be on is important. If you are on the wrong side you may have to drag your kayak across these to get back into the river. As I entered the river mouth the wind dropped off but I was still able drift in on the incoming tide. Fighting these tides can be slow going, especially when there is about 5 metres of flow to contend with.
