Hattrick of donuts!

Image
Perfect conditions on the water, but few willing & hungry fish

With a newly concreted boat ramp now dry and ready for use it took much less effort to launch from Woody Head on Saturday. This was my first attempt at using the new Island tramp though, so installing that took an extra minute or so. As soon as I'd pedalled past the shore breakers I swung myself over and sat on the tramp. It has no problems carrying my weight. I then stoop up and although it was a little wobbly (because of the water underneath it) I was able to do so. Excellent!

As I pushed out into Shark Bay I quickly noted how it helped protect on-deck items from water splashing out from the pontoon, including reel and camera. Throughout the course of the day I discovered it's benefit as a storage solution, as well as utility space. There are numerous little chores a kayak fisherman typically has to perform in a small space between the legs. The tramp provides a large, clear surface area where things can spread out comfortably and it's very easy to use. This tramp is a very welcome addition to my yak.

It's a good thing I had something to be pleased about because I had a great deal of difficulty getting fish to bite. I did find them, however, on numerous occasion. One school of what looked like Mack tuna couldn't be tempted by the lures I cast at them and the schools of tailor I found afterwards gave their 'chopper' namesake true meaning, by consistently chomping through my soft plastics (whitebait sized Squidgy flick baits seemed most attractive to them). Each encounter was brief and schools seemed easily spooked away. A few more bites came later in the day, but thats all they were. Throughout the course of some 5 hours kayak fishing, the only fish I caught was a small whiting, and even that was caught with my scoop net. I found it being harassed by a bird, flapping about on the water's surface and soon helped it on it's way back down into the depths... albeit impaled with a hook. Even that couldn't raise a fish. This is the third fishless trip in a row (even though last Sunday's effort hardly counts)!

Maybe I've worn out my mojo at Shark bay for the time being... I'm not sure. The thing I'm sure of right now is that I should go forth and try my luck elsewhere this long weekend. So today I'll be launching at Sandon and my target will be snapper.
