Single pontoon with tramp installed

25.5km is the total distance that I covered while kayak fishing off shore at Sandon yesterday, in some way demonstrating how desperate my efforts were to find the fish. All I knew about this place is that the water gets pretty deep in close and is a well known snapper fishing destination. Had I turned up with the tuna fillets I'd thawed out the night before (and not left them on the kitchen bench, stinking the house out) I might have improved my chances of catching fish. So instead it was just me and my lures and for the most part, a whole lot of depth to get them to sink down into.

I decided to do as little casting as possible today (to give the shoulder a rest) so started out by pedalling out through the heads and then letting the norwesterly winds blow me out to sea. When I was about 5 - 6 km out the wind changed direction slightly, swinging over to a northerly. This now had potential to push me further south than I wanted to be, so I changed direction and headed north into the wind, with the plan being to let the northerlies blow me back towards the river mouth at the end of the day.

Just like Shark Bay of yesterday, there were a few minor fish bust ups with tailor doing their thing, but the baitfish they were chomping were much smaller than the lures I was offering, which is why I think they were ignored. I didn't see much action on the sounder either - few arches and not a lot of interesting terrain. Looking out I could see a collection of boats a further 5kms out (which is probably where the fish are today) but that was too far out to venture with offshore winds predicted - especially while using the Adventure with an Island pontoon attached, as this does slow one down a little. So I did form a plan for a return trip, although this plan involves using 2 pontoons, and a sail :-)

The rocky headlands near to the river mouth certainly look fishy enough and it was while casting and retrieving plastics here that I got my one and only bite for the day. This area reminds me of some of my snapper spots in Jervis Bay and on the right day I'm willing to bet they fish just as well. So I've formed another plan for some shoreline kayak fishing as well.

As I write this report I am debating heading out today. Conditions look great. My body feels wrecked, however. Both Saturday and Sunday were fairly heavy fishing days although what really took it out of me was dragging the boat back to the car when I landed last night. Due to the public holiday the Sandon camping area is chockas and the only park I could get was about 400 metres away from the ramp, a good deal of it uphill. I think that when I do return to Sandon, it'll be during a time when holiday makers haven't invaded it.
