This clip is one of the more incredible viewings I've cobbled together, but not because it's any more entertaining or educational than anything else I've done, nor are there any seriously prized fish caught (although I was pretty pleased with the Pearly I caught). What makes this clip a standout is that it captures a once-in-a-lifetime moment that not only do I doubt I'll ever experience again, but nor would I want to.
If you've ever wondered what it's like to hook up to an 16 metre humpback whale from a kayak, you'll want to watch this clip. This particular specimen was fully grown and approx 35,000kg in weight. I wrote about how this all played out in the associated trip report. Surprisingly, I haven't had any hate mail delivered yet, although I have received a few comments on the fact that I used the magic 'F' word when it occured. I also received similar feedback on my last clip, where I lost a large longtail tuna at the side of the kayak following a 30 minute fight (once again speaking the magic 'F' word).
Whilst I refrain from swearing in anything I say via text (so you'll never have to read it here), there are times where doing so in front of the camera is practically unavoidable. I challenge anyone - even the pope - to hook onto a humpback whale from a kayak and not swear at least once (and in this case, I did only swear once). Same goes for the MIA tuna that was fought for half an hour and then lost in tragic circumstances. As for the magic 'F' word itself, well, if it offends you, I apologise. It just happens sometimes.
