Plug & prey kayak fishing for bream![]() My bream fishing season is off to a start A blanket of mist draped over the Clarence valley made for low visibility this morning, obscuring the line between air and water on the river. It was fairly cool when I launched at the Maclean boat ramp, with rays of sunlight barely permeating the mist. The was tide half-way through it's run-out phase when I hit the water at 6AM, starting out by trolling into the current and steadily towing a Berkley Frenzy hard-body lure on one rod and a Rapalla slashbait shallow-diver on the other. When Rocky Mouth came into view I put the trolling lines away for a while and started flicking around soft plastics briefly. ![]() Yeesh! No bites came where and when I expected while casting the gulp minnows (I tried several colours) and it didn't take terribly long for me to give up on it. More inclined to give the shoulder a bit of a rest, I decided to spend the rest of the morning trolling. So with the rods firmly in their holders and both lures wriggling around 10 - 12 metres behind me, I sat back with my arms behind my head and pedalled around to the various fishy spots in the area - plug & prey fishing and it's finest. It turned out to be a highly effective strategy to, netting me around 10 bream, ranging in size from small to very small. All falling for the Berkley Frenzy (I like this lure, as do bream apparently), all fish were released to fight another day - one of which had a nasty-looking gaping-wound injury on it's head. Displaying the incredible resiliency that even little bream posses, it darted back into the depths without showing any sign of being bothered by it. I also hooked what I'm pretty sure was a tailor. 'Tempted' might be a better word, because whatever chomped the lure off my line took it whole. I was surprised that no Flathead came out to play but no doubt I'll find them here another day.
