Hrmm... upgrades
![]() Tackle is getting bigger to match the fish The tackle has been upgraded to, now using 40lb wire traces (30kg mono just won't cut it here) and I've even had to upgrade to a bigger and better filleting knife, a Cold Steel Carbon V. Obviously the lures I am typically using are getting larger as well. The photo above illustrates the upsizing nicely. The black knife is the Cold Steel filliter, which has a 23cm blade that should be both easier to sharpen and manage lager fish with. The metal slug lure on the right is the size I'd typically use in Victoria. The 40gram model on the right seems to be more appropriate for QLD. Ditto for those soft plastics - the one on the left is getting more use up here, whereas the smaller one was more useful in Vic. Speaking of which, quite a few of the sport fishoes up here are using this alternate hook arrangement on hard body lures and I've taken to it pretty quickly. I'd seen it before but never bothered to try it out but aftr having lost a few good fish on trebles recently I was advised to give this a go. Simply remove the treble and replace it with 2 hooks positioned in opposing directions. ![]() 2 hooks placed in opposing directions make for a good surrogate for trebles It works really well to and if you allow your fingers to fumble around the hooks for a moment (not recommended) you'll find out why. Basically, as anything ecloses around the hooks – say, a fish's mouth – the barbs are pushed out and further exposed. It's a hook-setting trap that I'm betting will result in less lost fish.
21-08-2007 21:04 Don't worry Josh sadly, what we've experienced in nsw will be repeated in qld. gluttonous over fishing will deplete stocks and those who abide by the rules will suffer as a consequence of those who don't. what's wrong with catching just enuf to feed yourself @ a mate or too. give the redneck idiots 1/2 a chance and they blackmarket their excessive catches. Like highway cops with radar devices, there are not enough fisho inspectors on the waters. 21-08-2007 21:31 Don't worry Josh I actually don't see anything wrong with catching enough to feed yourself, your family and your next door neighbours. As long as it's legal and it's eaten, it's all good. If it's not consumed that way, it'll be consumed another way, and rec fishing does far less damage than commercial fishing. Your point is a good one though and I've given it a fair bit of thought lately. What I'd like to see is the introduction of an 'Aussie fishing license' which allows the holder to fish anywhere in Australia (that would save me right now). But to get it, I reckon people should sit and pass a test. Something simple, but enough to ensure that whoever passes has done their homework on bag and size limits. There are no fishing classes at school, so it's not unreasonable to suggest under education is the issue here. Only registered users can write comments.
