What floats your boat? There's an interesting discussion going on at the Ausralian Kayak Fishing Forums at the moment with the topic of interest being the future of fishing kayak designs. Of the many designs available, fibreglass and pedal-powered yaks are indeed growing in popularity for a plethora of reasons. I don't consider myself to be a purist in any school of thought so I don't really have a lot to add the the conversation. I don't agree with a few contentions that Hobie Mirage Drives cause problems when launching or landing in surf. On the contrary, I find that the ability to pedal into surf lets me push through breakers faster and pedaling while riding a wave seems to give me greater control of the ride. As someone who entered into the sport with a reasonable degree of kayaking experience (in a variety of designs, from inflatables to white water and sea kayaks) I can understand why some people might have doubts about the mechanical nature of the Mirage drive. But all I can say is don't knock it until you've tried it. There really is a lot to be said for hands-free kayak fishing - especially for trolling, which is what I find myself doing more and more of. And while it may be true that there is always potential for any mechanical device to suffer a failure of some kind, the very same is true for a shoulder joint (especially mine). For me, the Mirage drive is the perfect workaround for that dilema.
