All hope, no fish... but fun anyway

 Weather: - Warm, 23 °C, 5 knot south easterly

It might have been a little optimistic to think that the murky backwash from the gushing Noosa river may have cleared up enough by today. Whilst kayak fishing around Laguna Bay (trolling the entire time) it didn't take long for Billybob and I to determine that for the most part, Laguna Bay had been relatively shut down by the conditions.

We paddled a fair way to try and find some blue suede seas, but alas, that brown gunk was permeating the entire bay. Thats not to say there's nothing worth catching – there's every chance a few good Tuna are poking about, for example, but the reality is that a day or two more is needed for the area to start clearing up. We did put in some hard yards regardless, trolling a few km east of Noosa Heads, as well as passing over Jew Shaol and a few other (usually) productive reefs.

This puts a temporary end to my Noosa River yak camping plans. I could still do it, although I'm not sure if the fishing would make it worthwhile right now. I could be completely wrong and will put in some ground work to try and find out tomorrow. If I'm right about this, I may well have to chalk that down as another 'to do' location. The 'promise' of threadfin salmon is something I find strangely provocative indeed.

Either way I'm really keen to get back into the bay ASAP. As much as I appreciate the river/estuary systems around here, the more I listen to Billybob talk, the more I want to fish Laguna Bay.

Although we didn't catch any fish (not even a bite) I'm glad we went regardless. The fishing might have been slow, but Billybob was in a talking mood and I was very much in a listening mood. The wealth of knowledge on fishing Noosa that Bill posesses truly is worth more than a few pages in anyone's book. After one outing with him I had a very clear (albeit triangluated) idea of where to find the fish. The more I tuned in to the various species Bill has pulled out of here, the more enthusiastic I became. And thats saying something!

But it wasn't the tips I appreciated most... it was the yak fishing stories. Bill has some absolute rippers, which isn't so surprising given his proximity to the water and experiences with other kayak fishermen. My gut was literally hurting by the end of the trip because some of those stories were priceless.

Even though the fish weren't hungry, for me it was a worthwhile trip all the same, largely because it was just great to spend time on the water with Bill. We share some principle philosophies when it comes to fishing, so it was fairly easy for me to absorb the geyser of information he provided. Me thinks my Noosa destination report (coming soon) will be all the better for it.

would've been an absolute joy catching up with BillyBob... he's probably the biggest name in kayak fishing (esp offshore in Australia) going around. His vids are excellent.

I wish Modern Fishing would approach him to write a few 'Stealth Factor' columns... it seems like these columns say the same thing about yakfishing every month - ie. bass fishing in wild rivers.

Garfish, Billybob certainly deserves the reputation that he has. Not only is he a wealth of knowledge, he's also got loads of highly amusing stories to tell. I reckon he could fill a book with those alone.

I learned a hell of a lot from him in just one trip - most of which was related to fishing Noosa, but also got some good ideas on kayak fishing strategies as well.

We're heading out again tomorrow morning so hopefully we have better luck finding the fish.
