Too rough for coastal yak fishing, so the estuary system had to do![]() This little nook is known as 'Pauls landing' - not a terribly sucessful one I gather
I've splept in through many-a crack of dawn lately, which is a scenario I'd rather avoid so I was up at 4:00 yesterday in an effort to get out beyond the heads before the sun rised. Sadly, an incoming tide reinforced by a strong north easterly wind make the going really difficult. Launching at the boat ramp I pushed into it for about a kilometre but just as I reached the heads my weary legs (day after day pedaling has finally caught up to my feeble little legs) so instead I turned the kayak around and decided to let it sweep me away downstream. I hadn't planned for an estuary fishing adventure but that's exactly what I got and yes, it looks rather fishy in those parts. With such a network of fishy looking creeks, any fishermen with some sort of floatable boat would find somewhere worth throwing a line here. Geared for Bream and Flathead (on an ougoing tide would be my suggestion) hook up rate would be high. I managed to get onto a few Flathead along the way (only one worth keeping, just reaching the legal size of 35cm) but the rest of them were clearly undersizd. I stuck to the mangroves of the banks at either side, hoping to extract a Mangrove Jack from it's cover, although I failed to do so on that count, largely, I think, because I was using lines that were initially intended for the surf. Even tying on a 8lb leader didn't help because although I did get a few small nibbles from Bream, I wasn't able to cast those little lures exactly where I wanted them without getting the kayak too close to do so. Normally I do head out with at least one flick stick at the ready but on this occasion I left it back at camp. There's always another day, however, but my first order of business is packing up camp and moving to a more secluded site deeper into the sticks. I need to investigate my options here but the one I did find was at Workmans beach, which I suspect is only likely to lend itself to pelagic fishing - so it looks like my bigger, larger rigs will be getting put to use once again if I decide to camp there. ![]() Legal, by the hair of a bee's manhood ![]()
