I didn't want to leave the Mackay area with at least one more trip to Cape Hillsborough and Astro still hadn't exhausted his enthusiasm for kayak fishing (despite the considerable test of patience the past week had been shaping up into). Somehow we both still had it in us to get up at the crack of dawn and make the short trip over to the cape. Our fortunes weren't much different today, with no sign of the target Mackeral anywhere. Astro did reel in 2 small sharks, however, which may have explained why we didn't catch anything else. We were only out there for a couple of short hours this morning. Not only had fatigue finally caught up with us, it was time for me to move on today and with the fish off the bite it made good sense to spend the time getting an early start instead.
A huge thanks goes out to Carl 'Astro' Holland, who was good enough to put me up for a week and show me some of the various sights around Mackay. His enthusiasm for kayak fishing is to be truly admired, as is his cullinary expertiese. He's a handy man to have around when you need a fish cooked up. It's a real shame the fish weren't biting during my visit to Mackay, but I've seen enough to know that a return trip is more than likely. Hopefully the timing is a bit better next time. We discussed several options for catching up later for some island-hopping kayak fishing trips in the near future, so my crystal ball tells me that this isn't the last yakabout has seen of Astro. Below are a few photos I took from his backyard. This is typical of the sort of views he gets to experience on a daily basis. Enjoy :-)
