Treble hook protectors: worth their weight in gold

As Billybob and I prepared to launch into Laguna Bay during one of our trips while I was in Noosa, he noticed that I was about to head out through the surf with both rods fully rigged with hardbody lures. Both of them were armed with treble hooks, which tend to dangle precariously. He took that opportunity to politely tell me how stupid I was being, given that if something went wrong while launching into the surf, I'd probably end up wearing one or more of those hooks. Somehow I think he was speaking through experience.

He was quite correct of course and I realised the foolishness of my actions as soon as he gave me the good news. So learning from that I removed the lures immediately and then proceeded to launch. As fate would have it, there just happened to be bait fish being bust up by tailor right in the surf zone. Had those lures still been attached I would have cast into the action right away. I couldn't do that though, because now I had to stop and re-attach them.

So this dilemma got me thinking about a possible solution and that came to me when I stumbled upon these hook (or person) protectors in a the Tackleworld store in Bundy. I didn't hesitate to pick up an assortment of sizes that would cover the majority of the treble hooks on the lures I'd been using. It'll likely prove to be one of the best $5 investments I've ever made.
Not only are they are great way of safe-proofing the trebles for scenarios like the one mentioned above, but I've also concluded it helps to keep the hooks sharp, as well as protecting other lures from being scratched by the tips. A side bonus is that now I can fish my hand around my hardbody tackle box without worrying about getting jabbed by a barb.

Treble hook covers
Hi Josh,

Many people don't seem to realize, that if you cover all your lures with treble hook covers, you can stash a lot more hardbody lures in the same tackle box (e.g. stowaway) without fear of getting treble spaghetti galore. I've often packed 50-60 lures big and small into a large Plano Stowaway. I've also stuck a few lures with trebles covered into my fishing vest, and just went spinning/casting like that. I have a few hundred of them, the best investment I've made. Just get them in the right sizes to match the treble.
