Just try and wipe the smile off my face

coral trout
41cm coral trout - yummo

Launch:- 6:30 AM
Landed:- 9.00 AM
Tide:- 6:00 AM, High
Weather:- Warm, 28 °C, 10 knots easterly
Caught:
- Coral trout
Method:- Trolling hardbody lures & bait fishing

Apparently the Coral Trout have barely started to show themselves here at Hervey Bay yet, so I was pretty pleased (actually, replace the word 'pretty' with 'extremely') when I hooked one while trolling over the reefs at Gatakers Bay during a high tide this morning. I've been hanging out to bag one of these ever since I reached Queensland and now that I'm heading southwards again I was starting to wonder if it would happen. it's not uncommon to hear coral trout described as the nicest tasting fish in the sea, so even though it was a modest 41cm specimen, I figure I'll be eating rather well tonight.

Once again, I was trolling the ever-so deadly red-headed, white body type lure again (the inexpensive 'Trollcraft' variety) and the coral trout wasn't the only fish it accounted for. A short while after landing the trout I pulled up this little guy, which much to my surprise, was about the same size as the lure it was trying to stuff into its mouth. The very same lure also briefly hooked what felt a lot like a Snapper, although it managed to spit the hooks moments later.

In what was a fairly rare event for me, I began this mornings session by anchoring up and creating a berley trail with small chunks of mackeral. Then I sent out an unweighted hook with a nice bite size piece skewered onto it and soon after it was taken by something that looked to have a fair size to it. Unfortunately I was unable to set the hook. After that only pickers seemed to be showing interest (perhaps I overfed the fish with my chunky berley trail) so instead decided to troll a lure for the remander of the session.

As I found with my previous visit to Hervey Bay, Gatakers Bay was absolutely abundant with large turtles - all of which were so easily spooked with the slightest hint of movement. I'm having no luck at all getting a good photo of these guys but I remain hopeful. You don't get to see creatures like that down south and they sure are a sight to behold.
