Prawndog scores a new PB![]() Prawndog nets his new personal best bream I was fortunate enough to meet yet another AKFF member this weekend and was able to show him around my local kayak fishing haunt (Smith's Lagoon, the basin). Jason, AKA Prawndog is a Canberra based fisho who regularly fishes for fresh water species locally and saltwater species whenever he gets the chance. Although the fish were particularly cautious this day, it turned out to be a worthwhile trip after all because as the sun drew closer to the horizon, Jason managed to hook onto a rather nice Bream (which I estimate to being almost 40cm) that just so happened to mark a personal best for him. I was unable to land a fish anywhere near as good today, but the smile on his face made it all worthwhile to me. My instincts served well today - when I met up with Jason and inspected one of the lures he had hanging from one of his rods I said 'I like your chances of hooking a nice bream with that'. I also commented where I thought he'd have a good chance of hooking one and fortunately I turned out to be right on both counts. Admittedly the fish didn't put up much of a fight at first and for a moment we both wondered if it was in fact a flatty. I had my doubts, however, simply because of where he caught it - right where I thought the bream would be hanging around. ![]() Paying homage to the catch, moments before releasing it Despite this worthy catch (which was quickly released after a few photos) I was surprised how hard we had to work for fish today. We both caught a few flatties, but none of them were really worth keeping. I lost a moderately sized bream at the side of the yak and also a small tailor, which I hooked up while trolling on the way home after seeing Jason off at the boat ramp. It was definitely one of the quieter days I've seen in these waters, but as per usual, it was nice to get out and onto the water. Scenes like this pretty much say it all. ![]() Sunset over Smiths lagoon
