I just got back from watching The Dark Knight, which I've been looking forward to ever since Batman Begins. Wow. Just wow. I was never really a Batman fan as a kid and I probably wouldn't have gone to see Batman Begins if I didn't know it was being directed by Christopher Nolan (Insomnia, Momento, The Prestige). But Nolans first reimagining of Batman truly surprised me. It seemed to take a ridiculously corny concept and make it somewhat believable... or at least, as believable as say, James Bond. So I knew the next installment was going to be good, but I really didn't expect it to be this good. Heath Ledger. I'm at a complete loss of words to describe his performance as the Joker. Suffice to say that Anthony Hopkin's Hannibal Lector has just been surpassed as the greatest villain of all time, and by quite some distance. Rubbing shoulders with a who's who list of top-shelf actors (Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart) Heath actually made them look plain. Despite enjoying the film as much as I did, I left the cinemans with a heavy heart knowing that this is Ledger's last performance. Showing such incredible potential at such a young age leaves one wondering what might have been. Almost as impressive as his performance, I think, is the treatment provided to him by the screenwriters (Christopher and Jonathan Nolan). Any actors performance is only ever as good as the script allows them to be, and the Nolan brothers really gave him something meaty to sink his teeth into. Everything Christopher Nolan touches turns to gold (The Prestige was my favourite film until I saw The Dark Knight) and I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next. Don't wait for DVD to see this film. And don't turn up to the cinema expecting to zone out for a couple of hours either. You'll need your witts about you to keep up with the plot, which is not something one normally needs to do when sitting down to watch a super hero movie.
