![]() Plantation Point Vincentia, a great place to launch a kayak What started out as a calm and sunny day turned out to be a not-so calm and sunny day, with sth-west winds prevailing at up to 20 knots when I arrived. I should have known not to go fishing today, not just because of the conditions I was greeted with at Murrays beach, but also the realisation that I'd left my seat behind. I should have gone home and stayed home at this point, but instead I drove home, picked up the seat and went to Vincentia to see how it looked. Winds had changed direction by now, but were blowing just as hard. With high tide approaching the water was relatively calm so I decided to ignore the wind and head out any way. My target species was snapper today, which Plantation Point (Vincentia) is known for. I covered about 10km and took numerous lures for a tow-assisted swim, but was unable to manage a single solitary bite. After a couple of hours of trying I was faced with the dilema of heading back and packing up or staying out to wait for sundown, which is usually much more productive for snapper. I was doing well holding up against the weather (largely thanks to the Sharkskin and Aqua-fleece gear) and was tempted to stay out. That was until I remembered that I hadn't thawed out any thing from the freezer for dinner - so confident I was in being able to catch a fish. Sure, staying out would increase my chances, but then, I didn't like the look of how quiet it had been. So I opted to head back before sundown, giving myself enough time to thaw out some chops for the plate. Fishing has really dropped off here over the past few weeks in the area, today's example being nothing like my last trip to Plantation Point. Jervis Bay isn't the only place going through a dry-spell (fish-wise) at the moment. There has been a fair bit of discussion recently about how poor the sydney area has been fishing of late, mostly put down to the weather. It was, however, about this time last year that the rat kingies started showing up in good numbers, so hopefully there's a pattern about to emerge there. This is also considered to be a fairly good time to pick up a good sized snapper in this region, so I'll keep trying on that front. I have to admit, I'm starting to miss the flatties from the basin. They'll be back pretty soon and I'm looking forward to it.
